The project aims to monitor and conserve sea turtles, while collecting scientific information on the population that nests on Quiribrí Island. On the other hand, it promotes environmental education in schools and institutions to prevent future generations from replicating the current bad practices of the Limonense population such as the illegal capture of this species.

Environmental education is one of the pillars of this project because part of our work is to transform the vision that the Limonense community has regarding the sea turtle, highlighting its importance in the ecosystem. Ecological work is taken into account by collecting data on sea turtles in a given area, which can become a large area of scientific research due to the complexity of this ecosystem.

The sea turtle is vulnerable in the province of Limón due to the irrational use of the species, the population markets its shell, meat and eggs. The conservation program will raise awareness among this population through talks, workshops and alternative sources of employment.

Quiribrí Island is visited by more than a hundred people during a weekend, as a consequence, the beach where sea turtles nest is affected by bonfires, solid waste such as plastic, use of logs as seats, among other activities that alter the environment. successful hatching of turtle eggs. The nesting of the hawksbill species has been recorded, however, the leatherback, loggerhead and green turtles surround Quiribrí island for their feeding or reproduction, these four species constantly swim in the Caribbean Sea, which in the case of central Limón is notorious the solid waste and sewage pollution.

Finantial aid required: US 80.000. Thanks to your donation a new business model will arise, removing harmful practices to turtles, educating locals on the importance of this species for the ecosystem, promoting science and sustainable tourism practices.

  • The project promotes the care of nature and ecology | The project promotes gender equality | The project does not violate the rights of girls, boys and adolescents | The project does not incur animal abuse | The project is inclusive with the different ethnic identities | The project promotes work alternatives for the disabled population
  • Children and youth groups in the province of Limón because courses will be given on the importance of the sea turtle in the Caribbean and volunteers, both national and international, will be organized to monitor turtles and patrol the beach. On Quiribrí Island, it is intended to define a camping area exclusively for volunteers, an amount of 25 people per day is approximated, for the continuous monitoring of the activity of the sea turtle on the beach. Similarly, volunteers will be trained to provide environmental education in different areas of Limón.
